Wondering about where to watch the World Cup Final in Barcelona?

We asked Tom Quinlan for a cool suggestion.  Tom, a friendly journalism student from the States, is working with us during his summer vacation and he’s quickly found out best places to have fun in the city…

“If you want to experience the excitement of the World Cup Final while in Barcelona, look no further.  George Payne located, across the street from the Urquinaona metro stop, is just for you.  Arguably the most popular Irish bar in Barcelona, this pub offers the perfect venue to catch any sporting event.

If you aren’t exactly craving tapas for the game, don’t worry.  George Payne serves up substantial, hearty bar food.  It features classic staples such as burgers, fries, and nachos.  The potato skins loaded with cheese, bacon, and sour cream are a favorite of patrons.  The burgers served here reflect tastes from all over the world.  There is the Barack Obama Irish-American Burger served with blue cheese, guacamole, and jack cheese.  For a down-under taste Payne’s offers the Australian BBQ burger topped cheddar cheese, bacon, and bbq sauce.  You will see servers carrying out tray after tray of Payne’s renowned St. Patricks Nachos.  These starters come covered with cheese, salsa, guacamole, and sour cream.  They are award-winning and great to share among friends.

George Payne may be an Irish joint, but the crowds are international.  Depending on who is playing you could be in the company of impassioned Brazilians, Englishmen, or travelers from anywhere in the world rooting on their team.  The atmosphere is great for watching a ‘fútbol’ match.  Chants are liable to break out at any time and it truly feels like a party.

If you want to enjoy some bar food and want a table, it is a good idea to arrive early.  The pub fills up quickly before a fúbol game is broadcast.  Ideally you want to arrive at least 30 minutes early to grab a seat.  If you order your food during the middle of a game, it will likely take some time.  The wait staff can become bogged down with a crush of orders towards the middle of the game.

When it’s all said and done, George Payne is a prime place to catch a World Cup Final match.  You will be hard-pressed to find a more unique, fun spot to enjoy the game in Barcelona than at George Payne.”
